At V’Way, we believe in the transformative power of meaningful travel and sustainable tourism. While our approaches to sustainability may vary, our ultimate goal is the same:protecting the future of travel.

Changing the world can feel overwhelming, and adopting more sustainable practices is not always as easy as we wish, the journey toward responsible travel is a continuous process of learning, growth, and evolution.

Sustainable tourism is not just a passing trend; it is a vital necessity for the future of travel. This approach calls for mindful decision-making that ensures the long-term well-being of tourism destinations, local communities, and the natural environment. By integrating economic growth, environmental care, and social well-being, sustainable tourism provides a holistic framework for tourism development that benefits everyone involved.

In recent years, green tourism has gained global attention, becoming a key development direction for many countries. “Green tourism and investment” was the theme of World Tourism Day 2023, highlighting the importance of investing in eco-friendly tourism to promote sustainable development.

More and more tourists are now opting for outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, and swimming, which allow them to enjoy nature while reducing harmful impacts on the environment.

In Vietnam, many localities have embraced this trend, becoming pioneers in green and sustainable tourism development.

Supporting local communities to promote sustainable tourism

Sustainable tourism has the potential to uplift local communities by providing economic opportunities and preserving cultural heritage. At V’Way, we prioritize empowering local people to contribute ideas and share their perspectives, ensuring that tourism benefits are equitably distributed. Engaging with host communities helps protect their cultural identity while enhancing their quality of life.

Sustainable tourism prioritizes proactive management of environmental impacts, ensuring long-term viability. Responsible resource management, waste reduction, and biodiversity conservation are critical to this approach.

Sustainable tourism fosters economic growth by supporting local economies, promoting fair wages, and investing in community development. Empowering local businesses ensures that tourism drives inclusive economic prosperity.

Social and cultural sustainability is essential for sustainable tourism. By respecting and enhancing local cultures, traditions, and engaging communities in tourism planning, tourism can celebrate diversity while promoting mutual understanding.

Sustainable tourism offers visitors meaningful experiences that educate them about local environments, cultures, and sustainable practices. These experiences leave a lasting, positive impact on both travelers and host communities.

Immerse yourself in local traditions, arts and lifestyles, contributing to sustainable tourism

Sustainable tourism invites travelers to immerse themselves in local traditions, arts, and lifestyles. Instead of staying at global chain hotels, opt for homestays, eco-lodges, or community-based accommodations that reflect local culture. Participate in traditional crafts, cooking classes, and cultural ceremonies led by local artisans, giving you a deeper appreciation of the region’s heritage.

Activities such as hiking, wildlife watching, or eco-tours allow travelers to experience nature in its purest form. Sustainable tourism operators focus on minimizing environmental impact by using renewable energy, reducing waste, and conserving water. You can contribute by joining beach clean-ups, tree planting, or local conservation projects.

A fundamental principle of sustainable tourism is promoting economic development in local communities. Choosing locally-owned businesses for accommodations, dining, and activities generates income and creates employment opportunities for residents. Every purchase, whether it’s handmade crafts or a meal at a family-run restaurant, directly benefits the community.

Preserving Cultural Heritage

Sustainable tourism helps protect and revitalize cultural identity. From ancient temples to traditional festivals, tourism ensures local heritage is maintained and celebrated. By joining tours that highlight culture and history, travelers can help preserve these treasures while gaining deeper insights into the region.

According to Nhan Dan newspaper published on October 31, 2023

“A typical example is Hoi An (Quang Nam), a destination that has very early called on the community and tourists to limit the use of single-use plastic items. In September 2023, Hoi An officially launched the model of “Hotel without plastic waste.” The city strives to reduce plastic waste by 13-15% each year, aiming to no longer generate single-use plastic waste by 2025.”

“Recently, Co To island district (Quang Ninh) has also applied a pilot regulation requiring tourists not to bring plastic bottles, nylon bags, and materials that pose a risk of environmental pollution when traveling. Additionally, many tourism service providers have converted their operations to energy-saving and water-saving models, paying attention to recycling activities to reduce plastic waste.”

“A number of typical green tours have emerged, attracting both domestic and foreign tourists. These include a boating tour to collect garbage in Hoi An, cave exploration in Phong Nha-Ke Bang (Quang Binh), and turtle-watching tours at Hon Bay Canh (Con Dao island).”

  • Choose Eco-Friendly Accommodations: Opt for hotels or lodges that prioritize sustainable practices, such as using renewable energy and reducing waste.
  • Travel Off the Beaten Path: Explore less crowded destinations and support smaller, eco-conscious businesses.
  • Minimize Your Carbon Footprint: Use public transportation, cycle, or walk to reduce your environmental impact.
  • Respect Local Cultures and Traditions: Learn about local customs and ensure your activities are respectful of the host community’s traditions.
  • Avoid Single-Use Plastics: Bring reusable items such as water bottles, bags, and containers to reduce plastic waste.

Sustainable tourism offers more than just a fulfilling travel experience—it provides an opportunity to leave a lasting, positive impact on the places you visit. By choosing to travel responsibly, you not only preserve natural environments and support local communities, but also celebrate the rich cultural heritage of destinations.
